Yeah, I’m smoking a cigarette. You got a problem with that?

This young woman strode into the middle of Verdi Square, stood silently for a moment while she surveyed the scene around her, and then walked over to a newspaper/candy stand near the subway entrance, while staring intensely at her cell phone…

Note: on Aug 10, 2009, I made minor editing improvements to this photo. I removed some overly dark "cold spots" in the background, and lightened the shadows on the woman’s pants, so you could see them more clearly.

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.
I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …
The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.
Cigarette girl, pt.1

Sort of emo girl sitting on a bridge and smoking cigarette.
smoked my last cigarette…

…3 years ago — I still would like to have a smoke, but I know I can’t control it, so I have to keep away (I went from 60 to zero over night). Still — this package reminded my of the following song:
Cigarette by the Smithereens
Smoked my last cigarette, sat in bed for a while.
Thought of your face, and that brought me a smile.
Wanted another one. Fell back asleep, instead.
Woke and found you sitting there on the bed.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Burning up time.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Watch the smoke climb.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Wasting away.
Just like this cigarette, our time is running down.
Only one hour til you’re leaving this town.
Went to the corner store, bought us another pack.
Held my arm around you as we headed back.
I tried to change your mind. Didn’t want you to go.
I want you more, it seems, than you could ever know.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Burning up time.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Watch the smoke climb.
Cigarette, cigarette,
Wasting away.
Just like this cigarette, our time is running down.
Only one hour til you’re leaving this town.
Smoked my last cigarette, sat in bed for a while.
Thought of your face, and that brought me a smile.

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called candid_sexy_female_smokers…!, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
Love the red hair.
how can a woman be sexy and smoke. dry skin, smelly breath and clothes, rough voice etc
I assume that’s intended as a sarcastic, rhetorical question?
no, why?
if its fact then what is wrong with the comment
Nothing is wrong with your comment … it just seemed to me that you were conveying a strong opinion, rather than just a curious question. Obviously, you’re entitled to your opinon — and as it turns out, I agree with you …
But none of that has anything to do with the photo, in my opinion: I didn’t take the picture because I thought she was beautiful or sexy (which other people may well believe to be the case), but rather because of her pose, the look on her face, and the overall "attitude" that she seemed to be radiating…
I think she is giving the impression , "this is me and to hell what others think." in that case it is thought provoking".
That’s exactly what I thought — especially because it seems that she is looking directly at me, and is aware that I’m taking her photograph…
I wonder what the text/call she was expecting was about?
We’re a fascinating species.
I watched her for a while, but couldn’t figure it out …
Brave man, lol
The flat shoes seem incongruous, somehow.
Looks can be deceiving. She could be a perfectly reasonable, friendly, down-to-earth person rather than the kind of person one might think from a first-impressions look…
A
Wow, if there’s one thing that turns anyone ugly, it’s a cigarette.
I think most smokers are completely oblivious about the reaction that other people have to their behavior, and to the fact that they look so much less attractive. But there are others — like this woman — who not only seem to be aware of it, but are confrontationally aggressive.
great attitude and marvellous colour !
Thanks!

Smokers never do see what the problem is. "Hey, I’m outside now and so it cannot be bothering anyone." Well, I for one am bothered when someone lights up next to me outside. It still irritates me. Also, years ago I read that smokers create an average of $8,000 a year in loss time to employers due to time off for smoking related illnesses and taking numerous smoking breaks and/or wasting time using one hand while working on the job (the other on the cigarette). The extra illnesses of smokers causes health insurance to rise for ALL of us. So, those are some of what the problems are. And I have forgot to mention, I am tired of seeing thousands of cigarette butts every day outside on the streets and sidewalks. Smokers seem to think it is okay to litter.
Agree with you there Budder, though I would say the redhead is hot, my favourite flavour of hair colour is the redhead ggrrrr..
redhead
Blah, blah, blah….nice pic
-¿Sigue tan diabla tu niña?
-Sí, my dear – suspiró Mrs. Adams -.

this is what i wanna do when my kids are all grown up – renew the good ol times of being free to smoke without any hesitations! i used to do this all the time as a teenager, especially near trees! i love this pic. it is totally nostalgic (for me). i love how her eye is almost hidden and her bottom lip is relaxed ‘takin’ it easy’. Love it.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck with it
And thank you. Idea that I can impact somebody’s emotions really keep me going.
this is really great, and i think it is perfectly fine that you didnt get the cigarette, her face says it all.
Šajā bildē ir visi elementi, kuru dēļ man patīk fotogrāfija – B&W, patīkams grauds, kodīgs kontrasts, telefoto perspektīva un smuks asuma seklums. Malacis.
Paldies. Kāreiz tagad EOS 3000′ajā ielādēta šī pati filmiņa (Ilford XP2). Mēģināšu nedzīvot uz veciem taukiem.

Good for you, 3 years….awesome. I love the photo though, really nicely done….it is a great shot.
Seen in my contacts’ photos.
Wow, good luck. And nice picture indeed.
Werbungsreif, lieber Thomas!! LG
(B.B.King sang das Lied!!:-))
I’m happy that you quit 3 years before, well done. take away these cigarettes from you
I really like the DoF & the angle of this shot
I am shocked to hear I’m not the only one!!!!! I gave up smoking 90 cigarettes per day overnight in 1995 ….
Excellent macro Thomas. My last brand was HB!!
omg – ich habe erst vor sechs wochen aufgehört – lechz…. NEIN
Been there done that … and feel so much better now. Well, I didn’t go down directly to zero but close and 7 years ago. Congrats and keep it going another 150 years without it.

Gratuliere!!!
Ich war nie wirklich Raucher und bin sehr froh darüber… mehr so Gelegenheits- und Gesellschaftsraucher
Aber von 60 runter auf Null ist eine super Leistung!!! Respekt!
well done! not easy, but very sensible of you:-)
Beautiful image!
I don’t give it a fave, because it reminds me of a self-destruction period of my life. But the photo is really well done.
I quit in 2003 and I am keeping free from that dependency.
For years I told myself I would quit sometime in the future, but delayed forever the decision thinking "I can do that, I’m sure".
One day, while I was smoking in December on the balcony, my 3 year old kid asked me showing deep curiosity: "Daddy, why do you smoke?".I couldn’t lie to him and I realized that the true answer was "Because I’m an addict" and finally found the strength to get free in the real world and not only in the "wishful thinking world"
Good luck ! Don’t give in or you’ll be right back there.
I agree, this is definitively an artwork!!!and my comment deserve a fave!!
